New Zealand's Richie McCaw is a rare type of international rugby player, according to one expert, who said he somehow manages to step his game up when most needed.

Shaun Edwards told the Guardian that the number seven's ability is more than just talent and he claims McCaw is a perfect example of a 'Test match animal' who is prepared to put his body on the line for his teammates.

The Wales and Wasps coach said that the flanker has the uncanny ability of playing close to the limits of the rules and, for the most part, getting away with it any time he oversteps the mark.

"Aggression is fine, but if that alone was enough, then we might as well pick a bunch of bouncers or dancehall doormen, guys who like a rumble. Winning Test rugby demands more – guys who can stay cool during the mayhem," he said.

The New Zealand flanker manages to act with unrivalled bravery and also keep a clear head when doing so, according to the former Wigan man, who said watching him single-handedly win a penalty for his team is a "magic moment".
