Wales giving further credibility to rugby sevens?

The recent news that sevens will be a part of the 2016 Olympics has given some credibility to the shortened version of the game, which is often dismissed by rugby purists.

With kicking increasingly dominating the 15-a-side variety - as fans, the media and players alike bemoan a lack of entertainment - sevens offers an exciting alternative.

And it seems the Welsh Rugby Union is now willing to give the sport its full blessing, having awarded caps to the players who won the World Cup earlier this year.

The tournament concluded in March, so you have to wonder if the move is only now being taken because of the Olympic announcement.

Interest does seem to be growing, as eight unions have expressed a desire to host the next tournament in four years' time - Scotland competing against the likes of the USA, Argentina and Australia.

However, confirmation that countries intend to bid does not have to be given for another two weeks.
