New Zealand full back Mils Muliaina has been ruled out of the remainder of the Super 14 this season after breaking his thumb in the Cheifs match against the Highlanders on Saturday.

Muliaina underwent surgery on Tuesday to underpin the thumb and he is expected to be sidelined for 8 weeks effectively ruling him out of the rest of the Super 14 tournament.

The only way Muliaina may play this season is if the Cheifs reach the play-offs in which case the Cheifs full back may make it back in time.

The injury is an identical one to that suffered by Sharks Number 8 Ryan Kankowski who was also ruled out of the tournament on Saturday.
