Sharks chief executive officer Brian van Zyl has apologised for the way the side's fans conducted themselves after last Saturday's Super 14 defeat at Chiefs.

The Sharks crowd launched missiles at match referee Keith Brown and Chiefs kicker Stephen Donald after the player's last-minute penalty snatched a 19-18 victory in an absolute classic in Durban.

It seemed like the Sharks would pick up the win after going 18-16 in front with seconds left, but indiscipline from the Sharks cost them the match and ensured they began 2010 as disappointingly as 2009 ended.

Despite frustration about the manner of the defeat, Van Zyl said there is no excuse for such behaviour: "You could sense a lot of frustration in the stadium after the Sharks lost in injury time to a penalty awarded to the Chiefs, but we in no way condone the way some people reacted. It was not behaviour becoming of Sharks fans."
